Dr George Smith

George is the botanical postdoctoral researcher on the BIOFOREST project, and is based at TCD. His PhD (TCD, 2002) was an investigation of vegetation succession and the potential for native woodland restoration in clearfelled conifer plantations. George has also studied long-term changes in subalpine spruce-fir forests in the southern US caused by an alien insect for his MSc degree (U. Tennessee, 1997). Before and during his MSc, he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority researching disturbance and forest dynamics in spruce-fir forests and coastal forests. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in statistics (TCD, 2001). Additional experience includes woodland surveys, studies in broadleaf and short-rotation forestry, lecturing, participation in a regional ecosystem assessment, and participation in a botanical expedition to Guyana.
